Constantine

Constantine is a Mediterranean, Italian cuisine restaurant that resides inside the newly renovated Anndore House – a stylish boutique hotel that used to be Comfort Hotel.  If you’re interested to know more about the renovation and architectural details, you can read more at the Globe and Mail.

The kitchen is spearheaded by the chef Chaig Harding from Campagnolo and La Palma so you know there’s pasta and pizza on the menu. All the dishes we had were beautifully presented.  We started with the crude of the day, which was halibut ceviche nicely decorated with seasonal garnish followed by the fennel salad with cara cara orange segments – a California take on an Italian classic. The smoky flavour from the charred fennel and endive really comes across nicely with the Campari vinaigrette.

For the main, we had the Branzino and Cornish Hen.  While typically Mediterranean restaurants serve Branzino in whole grilled, Constantine wrapped the fillet around a braised artichoke and then roast it together.  The presentation is lovely, really unexpected.  The Cornish hen appeared ordinary, but the taste was amazing – juicy and lemony with a nice sweetness. There is a photo that Joe took as the chef was preparing our Cornish hen on the height adjustable grill.

To wrap up our meal, we took the advice of our server and had the sesame mouse wrapped in sesame tuile.  It was lovely, not too sweet, perfect for our liking.
