Le Pain Quotidien, a great lunch/brunch spot near Yorkville. We’ve actually been there a few times but this time Joe had his camera with him.
Our first experience at Le Pain Quotidien was actually in New York. Found by Belgian chef Alain Coumont, this chain started in Belgium and has expanded worldwide. Consistent interior – rustic French country look with use of communal table. Makes it warm and inviting with friendly staff.
Le Pain Quotidien means “Daily Bread” in French. Currently, there’re two locations in Toronto, near Yorkville and along Eglinton near Avenue Road. Their concept is simple – organic handmade bread. Mostly known for their open-faced sandwiches – Tartines. Made with organic whole wheat bread. A simple menu with baked goods, soups, salads and sandwiches. To be sure, there’s a tartine for everyone – cheese, no cheese, vegetarian, cold or hot.
This time, there’re four of us celebrating someone’s birthday in our office. I had the large café au lait – my way of getting the daily calcium. Joe and I shared the chicken curry salad tartine and the chorizo sausage, roasted red peppers and potatoes omelette; while our colleagues had the chicken & smoked mozzarella tartine and tuna melt tartine.
The great thing about tartine is that it’s already cut up in slices for you, like pizza, so makes sharing easy. You can try the different toppings. The bacon and scallions was nice touch to the tuna melt and the chicken & smoked mozzarella looked the most impressive.
Their patisserie up front has a display of pastries and desserts along with shelves of gourmet condiments, olive oil, coffee and tea for sale. For the birthday boy, we had the mini mousse duo – the chocolate was really rich and decadent.
Our tables were quite close to the table next to us, so I couldn’t help seeing the nice looking Atlantic shrimp salad and the Atlantic salmon tartine they were having. Hummm…. I thought, perhaps next time I will try their salad along with the pretty looking fruit tart.
Lunch for 4 was around $69

You’re welcome. Which was your favorite dish?
This was an excellent lunch. Everything is organic, fresh and reasonably priced. I had the cobb salad…delicious!
